Actually, Colorado doesn’t issue any state licenses for contractors. Only two fields are under the supervision of state authorities: Plumbing and Electrical. Whenever you want to operate legally as a plumber in CA, you have to apply and get Colorado Plumbing License.

Types of Colorado Plumbing License

In general, there are three main types of certificates for plumbers.

The first is the Residential one and requires the applicant to have at least 34o0 hours of experience. The permit includes construction, remodeling, and so on.

The second one is the Journeyman credential. The only difference, in this case, is the number of working hours. You should have completed at least 8400 hours of experience to be eligible as a journeyman.

What concerns the third one, it’s the Master’s level. Masters have to complete at least 5 years of experience and provide proof of their works signed and confirmed by the supervisor.

Requirements to get a CO Plumbing License

First of all, the applicant should be over 18. He or she must be a U.S resident and have SSN or ITIN number.

Actually, you may obtain the certificate to operate as a plumber without even attending the local trade school. However, education would help you to enhance your hard skills and develop the tactics you will surely need in the future. The education is available online and offline. In order to start, you should initially get all the required supplies and make the payments.

To be eligible for the training program, you should be at least 18 and have graduated from high school. In case you haven’t attended high school, you should provide the GED.

Besides all these, you may apply even if you have a criminal background. Prior convictions are handled on a case-by-case basis for applicants.

Fees and applicable payments

The fees are mainly based on the type of permit you apply for as well as the professional background you have. So, for the residential certificate, the initial fee is 100$. Journeymen should make a payment of $120 and the Master’s is $140 for the application.

Whenever you have got your permit, you should be attentive to keep it up-to-date. So, the due date is  February 28 of all odd-numbered years. Renewal is available both online and offline.

Examinations and Testing

PSI has set a variety of tests to make sure the person is eligible to be a licensee. So, to take the exam, you must have completed the required amount of working hours. Later, SPB will review your application and let you in for scheduling a testing day. You are able to register for it online, via phone, by mail, or by fax.

All licensure examinations cost $75 and should be directly paid to the PSI office no matter online, via mail, or by cheques in-person.

Reciprocity of Colorado Plumbing License

If you already have an out-of-state certification, you can transfer your certificate and work in Colorado. However, there is no direct licensing reciprocity. So, you should have your permit assessed and validated.

You can transfer your certificate to CA in two ways: through examination or by endorsement.

In all cases, you must have out-of-state plumbing permission to conduct a job in CA, however, you may also pass a licensing exam to earn an in-state one.

Whenever you feel like you need a temporary permit, just submit an Affidavit of Experience form.

If done all the steps successfully, you have to wait for the answer. Your application to take the exam will be approved or denied by the SPB.

In CA, the exam costs $70 and you must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly to pass.
